A lumpy envelope with "Katie" scrawled across the front appeared outside my bedroom door Saturday morning. When I ripped it open, something metallic dropped out and clanged to the floor. I'd never seen a Bronze Star before, but I knew I was looking at one now. The note accompanying it was short and to the point:
Katie--
I'll always remember that you tried to help.
Good luck with your battles. Since you don't
get medals in civilian life, I'll loan you mine.
